Job Title: Study Abroad Counselor

Reports To: Study Abroad Program Manager / Director of International Programs

Job Summary:

The Study Abroad Counselor plays a crucial role in advising students on study abroad opportunities and assisting with the preparation and logistics for international education programs. This role requires a blend of student service, advising, and administrative tasks, and is responsible for guiding students through the process of selecting, applying for, and succeeding in study abroad programs. The Study Abroad Counselor will also build and maintain relationships with universities and partners abroad, ensuring students have access to high-quality international experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Student Counseling & Advising:
    • Provide guidance and counseling to students about various study abroad opportunities (programs, universities, scholarships, etc.).
    • Assess students’ academic goals, career aspirations, and financial capabilities to recommend suitable study abroad programs.
    • Advise on visa requirements, travel, accommodation, and cultural integration for students going abroad.
    • Assist students in understanding the academic credit transfer process and ensure their courses abroad align with their academic plans.
    • Conduct individual and group advising sessions, information seminars, and pre-departure orientations.
  2. Program Management & Coordination:
    • Assist with the development, promotion, and administration of study abroad programs.
    • Help students complete the application process for their chosen programs, ensuring all deadlines are met.
    • Work with partner universities and educational organizations to ensure smooth program operations.
    • Manage and track student application, placement, and enrollment statuses for study abroad programs.
    • Assist with program evaluation to improve future services and experiences for students.
  3. Documentation & Compliance:
    • Maintain accurate records of student applications, program participation, and outcomes.
    • Ensure compliance with international education regulations, university policies, and health/safety protocols.
    • Advise students on obtaining necessary documents (passports, visas, vaccinations, etc.) and assist in their completion.
  4. Marketing & Outreach:
    • Develop and distribute promotional materials (brochures, emails, websites) for study abroad programs.
    • Organize and participate in recruitment events, such as fairs, presentations, and info sessions, to raise awareness of study abroad opportunities.
    • Build relationships with academic departments to promote study abroad programs among faculty and students.
  5. Support for Students Abroad:
    • Offer pre-departure support, including preparing students for cultural differences and international travel.
    • Provide ongoing support to students while abroad, addressing any concerns related to health, safety, and academic issues.
    • Offer re-entry services to help students integrate their experiences abroad back into their academic and career goals.
  6. Collaboration and Networking:
    • Build relationships with international partners, universities, and organizations to create new opportunities for students.
    • Attend professional development opportunities, conferences, and workshops to stay up-to-date on trends in study abroad and international education.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Education, International Studies, Counseling, or a related field.
    • Master’s degree in Higher Education or International Education is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Proven experience in international education, student advising, or counseling.
    • Familiarity with study abroad programs, higher education policies, and cross-cultural communication.
    • Experience in organizing events or workshops is a plus.
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and international partners.
    • Knowledge of study abroad opportunities, visa requirements, and international student services.
    • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office and student management software (e.g., CRM systems, application platforms).
    • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
    • Problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities, especially in dealing with international logistical issues.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Willingness to travel internationally and participate in on-site visits to study abroad destinations.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with a focus on student satisfaction and safety.

Work Environment:

  • Full-time position, may require occasional evening or weekend work to accommodate students’ schedules.
  • The role may involve some travel for program assessments, student orientations, and international partnerships.
